Situation
Pilot Communications is a 40-year-old R&D company developing and selling high-end headsets to commercial, military and general aviation pilots. Amid declining sales and increasing competition, it needed a bold rebrand and a better e-commerce experience, without a long, expensive build.
Strategy
A SWOT workshop with stakeholders set the objectives. Instead of the fully custom theme the client first requested, I recommended a hybrid approach: customize a proven Magento theme around the brand and customer requirements rather than rebuild commodity functionality. That kept flexibility while cutting development time and simplifying product and customer migration.
Execution
- Brand refresh. A new logo and updated visual language that kept the technical, aviation-focused character of the brand.
- Product discovery. Clearer hierarchy across headsets, intercoms, adapters and accessories, with more direct paths from category to product.
- Responsive commerce. Homepage, category, product and cart designed as one system for desktop and mobile.
- Pragmatic build. Third-party tools and performance work on a proven Magento foundation.
My role
I facilitated the SWOT, set the creative and digital strategy, designed the new logo, selected the technology approach and implemented the design in Magento.
What changed
Pilot moved from an aging digital presence to a clear, responsive store that reflects the quality of its products.
The right implementation strategy did not need to be the most complicated one: focused customization and clear priorities took the project from concept to launch in under four weeks.
